Each year the Western Clinicians Network (WCN) recognizes an outstanding clinician who throughout his or her career has demonstrated clinical excellence in their endeavors. This year WCN's Clinical Excellence Award is being presented to Jennifer Wilson, MD, MPH, FAAFP, Family Physician of OLE Health in Napa Valley.

She is a board-certified Family Physician, a graduate of UC Davis School of Medicine, who completed her residency at the San Jose Medical Center Family Practice Residency Program and her MPH at UC Davis.
Throughout her career, Dr. Wilson’s commitment to the underserved has been in the forefront. This began as an undergraduate volunteer at a number of community-based clinics including what is now CommuniCare Health Centers, where her work with patients inspired her to a career in medicine. She makes deep heartfelt connections with her patients, and has over the years taken on many if not most of the health center’s most challenging patients, including the poorest of the poor and the sickest of the sick. She is staff physician at the local homeless shelter and has served through the years on a number of community health efforts aimed at improving services to persons dealing with challenges like homelessness, mentally illness, and substance abuse.

Dr. Jen (as she is referred) embodies the mission of OLE Health to provide high quality care to all.  Dr. Jen is viewed by her colleagues as a walking encyclopedia of clinical medicine and offers consultations with a growth-mindset, teaching approachability.  She has an exceptionally complex patient roster and gives each patient her undivided attention and knowledge. Her conviction cannot be overstated, as she puts it: “this is not a career for me, this is my calling.”   Patients says that “she makes you feel like you are her top priority”, an increasingly challenging task in the fast paced health center.

Dr. Jen stepped up as OLE’s interim CMO when she was needed and excelled in this role during a year of transition. A true clinician at heart, she went back to patient care as soon as she could, although she continues in her role as Medical Director of Quality Improvement.

Since she began in 2006, OLE staff has heard countless patient stories where she went above and beyond, saved lives, empowered her patients, respected individuals on their readiness stage, and supported her peers.  However, perhaps the most telling example of the respect she commands is that she is the primary care physician for many of her fellow employees -- what a testament to have coworkers select her as their personal provider for themselves and their families; there cannot be a more powerful testimony.  When one of OLE's providers was tragically losing her spouse to pancreatic cancer, they chose Dr. Jen to care for him in his final chapter.  If you or your loved one ever confronts disease, hardship, or mortality then you would want the smartest, kindest, and most compassionate doctor-- and that doctor is Jen Wilson.
